To have an outside fire you must have a written permit.
Permits may be obtained by going to the South Berwick Police Department Dispatch Center.
All open burning shall be in conformance with existing laws and regulations of the Maine Forest Service, Department of Environmental Protection and local ordinances.
In accordance with State of Maine Title 12, the out of door burning of plastic, rubber, Styrofoam, metals, food waste, chemicals, treated wood or other solid waste is PROHIBITED!
Permits will only be issued to burn grass, brush, leaves and clean wood.
Construction material from new buildings, buildings under renovations or buildings that are being demolished will be inspected by a South Berwick Fire Officer before a permit can be issued.
Permits will be issued Monday through Friday after 1700 hrs. There will be no more than 10 fire permits issued per day during the week.
On Saturdays and Sundays there will be no more than 10 fire permits issued from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm hrs and no more than 10 fire permits issued from 5:00 pm - 12:00 am.
Permits will not be issued in advance of the day that a person wants to burn.
Trash cans or burn barrels are not allowed.
The Fire Department will issue cooking/camp fire permits that are good for 3 years. Please call the station at 384-2731.
